Wilderness Society Illawarraalmost 5 years agoCouncil needs to take a leadership role with local business and unions to develop the emerging renewables industries here in Wollongong.
0 comment5Tatnellover 4 years agoMake it easier for people to become involved in bush regeneration and weed removal
I have called council twice and left messages attempting to become involved in bush care but have had no response. So I decided to look into starting my own group but found the organisation of such a group quite overwhelming due to time constraints. I am certain there are many many people in the region who would live to be involved in tree planting/weed removal/ habitat creation. Wollongong council should tap into these eager volunteers who want to do something positive.

Making sustainability positive and fun and creative is so important. In spring hold a public screening of 2040 than can be sponsored by businesses and promoted and supported by the many local community organisations. I'm sure Damon Gamey the director would mind providing a special rate to air it in Wollongong for the wider community. Pair it with a sustainable event involving local stores, produce, eateries who use containers and utensils that are not plastic etc and you have a bigger pull to get many in there and watch this fantastic and inspiring positive look at what is possible. Council should have an internal viewing for all employees to get them on board and supporting it! 😀

3 comments12comments you wantalmost 5 years agoMORE Deer in the bush to minimise or eliminate the need for back burning and pollution in the air!
At the moment the rural fire service backburns almost every week end to reduce the risk of a bog fire. The purpose of this is to get rid of the undergrowth. In the process native plants and animals are killed. Deer eat the undergrowth. So, increase the deer numbers to eat all the undergrowth and so eliminate the need for back burning. In the process you can create and industry. That is, leather for fashion and boutique organic and free range meat. For example, you have a deer problem in the trees on the highway, or so you think, use this to the city´s advantage. i.e. 1. Instead of back burning which results in animal death and the obliteration of low lying shrubs and grass lands, INCREASE the amount of deer who eat these anyway. Then, support the fashion industry (me) who needs leather. I could use the skins for bags and shoes and coats etc. The meat could be marketed as a boutique meat. It´s organic and free range at its best! Its a luxury and a staple food choice in Europe so why not here??!! you would eat it if served to you overseas? I would! Then extend this further and turn ´gong into a fashion house hub. have dedicated FREE access to fashion hub that includes: knitting machines, seamstresses etc. As I said before, look at the local talent! How many computer whiz kids go overseas to make it? Or our best economists? And can I ask, who on Council lives on Cliff Road to be focusing SOOOOOO much wasteful and useless attention down there?! Money WASTED that could have been spent on employment and financial development opportunities! Hmmm??!! The area that DESPERAtelY needs attention is around the hospital and unless everyone is up in arms to fail to listen! New Dapto Road turning onto Urunga needs attention. It should be made a one-way street as there is a blind spot when you turn onto Urunga from New Dapto road. There has been both accidents and near misses. 2. Lined parking is brilliant in Urunga and needs to be extended to ALL STREETS around the hospital! Including New Dapto Road etc. 3. Treeline ALL the streets with a theme (each individual street) and fill these trees with fairy lights. Do you want to improve the profile of Wollongong? then the only way to do that is to attract TALENT! NOT idiotic tourists ! money completely wasted pampering to them! Sure some, but the extent this (ie the beaches) has gone WAYYY too far! Wollongong is now known for its ridiculous concrete beaches and the fences and gates around them! seriously??! MONEY WASted! 4. STOP kids and parents from murdering the sea life in the rock pools! If they don´t know how to care for them, then signs should be put up to leave them alone! If you attract real talent then others - with money will follow! The reputation of the city will improve. This will bring money and other businesses in the area. At the moment, Wollongong is known as the drug den of Sydney and the Hillbilly´s of Sydney. Our largest employer is the health industry. So, aim for better talent! beautify the hospital and the streets around it, provide state of the art facilities (that includes the new lasers (non-toxic) to replace CT and MRIs, improve the teaching of these etc etc Extend this principle out to the other local talent in ALL areas. SCOUT talent etc etc...there is SOOOOOO much you lot can do and don´t WHY? all you´re doing is focusing on the beach - which is now OVER DEVELOPED and bulding concrete jungles! How many of the wealthy and skilled talent live in the jungles??! not many! Most have a HOUSE not a jungle where other people dictate what you can and cant do to your BLOCK OF CEMENT! NO MORE DEVELOPMENTS!
