What is the Draft City of Wollongong Bike Plan about?

The Bike Plan is a strategy that spells out infrastructure and non-infrastructure measures to be implemented in the Local Government Area (LGA) to support improved cycling experiences.

The Bike Plan is geared towards all types of cyclists, with the aim to increase participation in cycling, both recreational and commuter, throughout the LGA.

Why do we need a Bike Plan?

The Bike Plan aims to increase participation in all types of cycling by creating a better connected and safer network of bicycle routes.

The Bike Plan also contributes to a number of community goals as outlined in Wollongong 2022, including that “we are a healthy community in a liveable city”, and that “we have sustainable, affordable and accessible transport”.

Finally, community goals outlined in Wollongong 2022, strongly support bicycle strategies that establish the city as bike-friendly, and that promote the delivery of interconnected and accessible cycleways and footpaths. The Bike Plan provides strategies to achieve this community vision.

How was the Draft Bike Plan developed?

The Draft Bike Plan was developed via an extensive engagement process, with community feedback gathered from May - July 2013. We engaged with cycling groups, businesses, community groups and schools, as well as residents throughout the LGA.

What new routes will be proposed by the Draft Bike Plan?

The Draft Bike Plan has a series of proposals to extend the existing cycling network. Community feedback identified that City Centre connections, and connections between the University and the City as particularly important, and these have been identified as priority routes in the Draft Bike Plan.

Joining existing sections of the bike network, by filling in missing links was also identified in the engagement process, with the Draft Bike Plan aiming to improve network connectivity between the City, Figtree, Dapto, Kembla Grange and other areas.

In 2012, Council endorsed the creation of the Grand Pacific Walk, which will link to the cycling network identified in the Draft Bike Plan.

Is the Draft Bike Plan just focused on new cycling infrastructure?

In short, no. The Draft Bike Plan also provides strategies for improving existing cycling infrastructure in the LGA, such as signage, linemarking and maintenance.

Furthermore, the Draft Bike Plan also includes a range of non-infrastructure measures to encourage safe behaviour amongst cyclists and other road users, promote cycling in the community, improve cyclist skills and provide better access to bicycle information.

What is the next step for the Draft Bike Plan?

The Draft Bike Plan is on exhibition until 19 May. We will then review community feedback, with proposed changes to the Plan reported to a Council meeting in June 2014. Council will then make a decision about adopting the Bike Plan.
